White-necked Jacobin (Florisuga mellivora): This striking hummingbird is easily recognizable by its bright white neck, chest and flowerlike tail, which beautifully contrast with its iridescent dark blue head and green feathers. The White-necked Jacobin is found in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. Males are particularly eye-catching, while females have more subdued colors with spots and stripes. This species is quite common and well-known.
Marvellous Spatuletail (Loddigesia mirabilis): The Marvellous Spatuletail is one of the most unique hummingbird species and is found only in a small area in Peru. The male has distinctive tail feathers that end in flat, spatula-like tips, which he uses during courtship flights to impress females. These graceful birds are threatened by habitat loss, but efforts are underway to protect their habitat.
Tufted Coquette (Lophornis ornatus): This tiny hummingbird, found in northern South America, is one of the most colorful and charismatic species. Males are easily identified by their orange crest and cheek feathers, which resemble fans. Tufted Coquettes are often found in flower gardens and along forest edges, where they feed on nectar and small insects.
Horned Sungem (Heliactin bilophus): The Horned Sungem is a beautiful hummingbird found in the savannas and open areas of Brazil and Bolivia. Males have two prominent 'horns' of elongated, iridescent feathers on their heads, giving them a unique appearance. This species is typically seen around flowering plants in open landscapes, where they fiercely defend their territory against intruders.
Allen's Hummingbird (Selasphorus sasin): Allen's Hummingbird is a small, vibrant species native to the coastal regions of California and parts of southern Oregon. Males are distinguished by their brilliant orange-red throat patch and green back, while females have more subdued colors with speckled throats. Its distribution includes southeastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, northeastern Peru, and western Brazil. This hummingbird is notable for its distinctive crest, a small but prominent tuft of wire-like feathers on its head, which gives the bird its name. These crest feathers, combined with its iridescent green plumage, long tail feathers and small size, make it a visually captivating sight. Despite its beauty, the Wire-crested Thorntail is elusive and can be challenging to spot in the dense foliage of its habitat.
